ESSIM stands for Ethanol Sensor Signal Interface Module, and on a 3.0 EcoBoost Explorer ST or Lincoln Aviator it removes the guesswork from running ethanol. Instead of assuming what came out of the forecourt pump, the calibration gets a live reading of ethanol content and fuel temperature taken at the engine rather than back at the tank, so the map responds to the fuel actually reaching the rail. The module puts out analog, frequency and CAN signals that can all be used at the same time, so it feeds a tuning platform such as HP Tuners while you watch the same numbers on the Bluetooth app. It arrives as a vehicle-specific kit, pre-terminated, with the sensor already mounted on its stainless bracket.
Ethanol content varies between filling stations, between seasons and between tanks, and every splash of petrol on top of an E85 fill moves it again. A map written for one blend is running blind on another. Sensing at the engine also catches the real fuel temperature, which is a genuine variable on a hot-running turbo V6 in traffic. Once the ECU can see both, the tuner can build a proper flex strategy rather than a conservative fixed map, and you can fill up wherever you happen to be.
