What Are the Different Versions Available?

Staun Tyre Deflators are sold in Standard Duty (SD 6-30 PSI), Light Duty (LD 1-10 PSI) and Heavy Duty (HD 15-55 PSI). We only stock standard duty which is perfect for the majority of activities that require airing down. Unless you’re running a 6x6 vehicle (heavy duty) or looking to air down to < 10 PSI for rock crawling with bead lockers, standard duty will be fine - don’t get sucked into automatically thinking heavy duty on everything is best.

What Is the Purpose of Airing Down?

There are two main benefits to airing down tyres on unpaved surfaces. First, the increased contact area of your tyre with the ground increases your traction “footprint”. Second, a lower pressure tyre is softer and will absorb more shock from a rough trail.

How Much Should I Air Down?

This is a fun question to discuss with your off-roading friends, as there will be no shortage of opinions. Manufactures recommend street tyre pressures, so on the trail the decision and liability is up to you. Factors that may affect your decision include the weight of your vehicle, environmental condition, your personal driving style, and your risk tolerance. Many say they start noticing the benefits of airing down at 70-80% of published pavement pressure. Experiment and determine what works best for you.

Is It Possible To Air Down Too Much?

Yes, there are risks. The lower the PSI, the greater the stress on your tyre beads, which is where the tyre seals to the metal wheel. Those driving with very low pressures typically have wheel “bead locks” installed to assure the bead remains sealed on the tyre. For example, most drivers who use the Staun Light Duty (1-10 PSI) deflators use bead locks. Also, more aggressive driving styles will increase the stress on your beads. Aggressive driving might include high speeds, fast turns, and quick acceleration or deceleration.
